The company I work for, which has a well-established site, will be launching a second site this autumn. The new site has a different brand, and a focus on a smaller niche than the original site, but will be using some of the same content, drawn from the same database.

What's the best way to approach this situation from an SEO point of view? Ideally, of course, we'd like both sites to rank well in the results pages, but if one has to take priority, we'd prefer it to be the new site.

My approach these situations is this is to build a completely new entrance and offer it as the optimized branded alternative, for the web visitor. Make it a complete entrance with all the basic sub-level pages (eg. About Us, What We Do etc.) and then figure out a well-optimized way of delivering the redundant data.

Keep your focus on the web presentation for the visitor. Thinking of the visitor's experience is thinking about the search engines too.
