Bad for SEO to have large articles rather than breaking them up?

When writing my tutorials, they can come out to over 20 printed pages. In terms of SEO, is this bad? Would I be better off breaking up these articles into multiple pages or articles? I find that when you break up an article into multiple pages, the SEs tend to really index only the first page. I could be wrong on this though.

Any suggestions on the best method to create articles for SEO purposes?

In my opinion, find more keywords about the theme you write about in your article. Then split the article and optimise each part for a different keyword. This way you'd get people coming from different keywords (more traffic), which is better than optimising just for one main keyword. That's what i would do, but i'm not a SEO expert =) .. as for the search engine not indexing all the pages, i think if you leave it enough time, eventually it should index all of them. If it doesn't, you should think of making a better site navigation system... cause maybe the SE didn't even scan them...

Vis3R's point is right...

From the SEO standpoint, longer or shorter content makes no difference unless keyword proficiency (positioning and relevance) and density remain undisturbed.

Lest I miss the trees for the woods, human browsers love thematically short content to read at. Longer it is, less probable is the CTR.
