Duplicate Product Names

Same product name across multiple retailers

Hi all,

I'm trying to assess the potential risk/benefit to SEO of using the product name provided to us by the vendor, which also is being used by multiple other retailers that sell the same product and buy it from the same vendor. These are generic products like bookcases, cabinets, etc. with a unique name that the vendor has coined (which still includes the word "bookcase" in the name, but prefaced with a fancy descriptor.)

My question is - Do the search engines see the same product names across multiple websites as duplicate content and filter out some of those results? My hunch is "no" but I wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone can confirm or has any thoughts on the matter.

Many thanks in advance!

No.

So long as the marketing stuff surrounding the word is your own, your only problem is to build a better site than the others.

Selling a 'brand' rather than a generic has other ups and downs;

Potential customers may be reassured that the stuff is 'OK' and has a quality reputation - equally, if the stuff falls apart, it'll be on the web.

Also, you can search the terms and see what your rivals are doing, and what they charging. So can your customers.

But NO to your specific question :)

Agree wth Quadrille and will add one caveat. If the products being sold are promoted via feeds, and the feeds are the same as other sites get, then in that case yes, you would potentially run into some problems. As Quadrille said though, so long as your marketing materials and copy selling the items is unique to you, you shold be fine.
