I had someone ask me the following question today:

"As you might know there is ample website designers and seo's,
but to find the right person that works hard to get your rankings
high is the problem... Gimme one word (if possible) to ask a
business owner who wants to sell me SEO services on his website that
I can use to ask him the pertinent questions about:

"1. What does this chap do to improve rankings

"2. What does the chap do to get as many times as possible the
website name on the Web.

"I am very much aware the best person will be the one paid best, but
gimme a "word" or two that I can "test" the owner."

Obviously there's no "word or two" that you can ask an SEO to see if s/he's reputable, but this is a good question about dealing with potential firms / consultants and finding reliable help. Also probably reveals the uneasiness people have dealing w/the SEO industry - lots of conflicting / specialty / advanced info and very little concise advice (unless you know where to look - most don't).

I know my feelings about this and I've advised this person. But I'd like to hear some other thoughts as well.

Thanks-
adam

In my opinion anyway one word hmm “EXPERIENCE”

If your after an SEO specialist that WILL do the work your paying them to do you need to look at their history. Ask to see a few examples and look at what work/time they have put into it, if you are a beginner you can use way back machine to look at a site from a before and after view.

We have clients all the time asking to know exactly what we do, now I’m my experience they tend to run off with our replies and try to perform the methods our sales staff have told them to do there self’s, from some this has been successful however in most cases its not.

If you really wanted an SEO expert to handle all your promotional needs you should look into there business practises a bit more, I know I wouldn’t feel happy giving a stranger money, however I also know if I knew how they worked and what feedback they had I might be happy to hand over my hard earned cash.

So basically ask who they have promoted, and what successes their clients have had from the promotion. Also if an SEO specialist is offering you no 1 positions for like £500 you know its more or less simply a sale not work, I have come across this far too much.

Hope this helps.
