I've been researching my competitors' backlinks in order to get the same inbound links. On a whim, I used the linkfromdomain: operator in MSN's Live and discovered that they are all linking out to authoritative sources.
My question is: Can these outbound links be helping them in terms of SERP ranking, PageRank or "authority rank"?

The short answer: Yes, absolutely. Do a search on WebmasterWorld for related phrases. Been tons written on the subject.
