Robert Charton mentioned this old thread the other day and it has applicability to your question: Avoiding excessive repetition in global text links [webmasterworld.com]

Still relevant today.

But here's a question: Read that thread carefully and see if you can tell where the consensus came out. ;-)

Another alternative: Go look at the SERP's for the terms you care about. Look closely at the sites tha come up, and draw conclusions. You will, either in the set of SERP's you care about or other SERP's, find both alternatives ranking well.

Cross a lot of lines at once and your site will suffer in the SERP's. Cross a few, and it may depend on how much strength and juice your site has; the more it has, the more you might get away with.

Hmm, where did I put that SEO scorecard? ;-)

'at's not a bad solution.

And the more you push against other lines, the more the second option in your first post makes sense. Balancing act.

Hey, OldWolf... Some of us even remember the year 2000. ;)

There are a lot of goodies in the site archives that you can find via Google search using site:webmasterworld.com.

But here's a question: Read that thread carefully and see if you can tell where the consensus came out. ;-)

caveman - Thanks for posting the link. I've been struggling with sleep deprivation the past several days. Yes, overwhelming consensus on that thread. ;-)

I was hoping that a wiser crew would come in and hash it out again.
