Another alternative: Go look at the SERP's for the terms you care about. Look closely at the sites tha come up, and draw conclusions. You will, either in the set of SERP's you care about or other SERP's, find both alternatives ranking well.
Cross a lot of lines at once and your site will suffer in the SERP's. Cross a few, and it may depend on how much strength and juice your site has; the more it has, the more you might get away with.
