How come?

You can't find my site on only one keyword

I have a relative new site, which now is online for about 6 months. The site’s subject is rather competitive, but I’m working my way up to get it ranked well. The main problem I’m having now is that I’m not ranked at all when you search on only one keyword.

Let’s say the subject is widgets, and everyone needs a widget once a year :). But there are different kinds of widgets, which are all represented on my site. If someone searches on Google for ‘information widgets’ most of the time my site will show up on the first page of the serp’s. But if some just types in ’widgets’, my site isn’t ranked at all! At least not in the first 25 pages.

How is this possible and can I do something about this?

The very short answer is many others have been more successful with their SEO efforts for the single term 'widgets".

Your thoughts on what you do next should begin with
determining whether that matters. Does your target audience search for "widgets" a lot, or do they mainly search for 'cheap widgets', 'buy widgets' 'red widgets' 'green widgets', 'your-town widgets', etc.

Figuring that out is probably useful information.

Keywords like 'cheap widgets', 'buy widgets' 'red widgets' etc. already are ranked very well. My problem for now is to rank high on just one keyword.
Have I done something wrong in my seo tactics, or is it impossible to obtain a high position in a competitive market, within 6 months?

I'm not a pro, not even close. However kicking it in high gear and then sustaining high ranking on a competitive single keyword in the first 6 months strikes me as falling in the realm of perhaps not impossible, but somewhat unlikely.

I wish you luck.

kevin hit the nail on the head - if i could rank on the top page in 6 months for competitive keywords i would own the galaxy mortal

build links, build links, then build some links

not on those BS link farms either - on real sites

your popularity will rise (along with your position) if your site follows googles webmaster guidelines and provides decent content

good night and good luck
