yeah, using rss is using off-page seo.

you can use them for on-page SEO as well if they fit with other pages of your site.

if you've got a feed of upcoming events, for example, and other pages that describe the actual venues, then you can put the RSS feed for that venue's events on the same page. it keeps an otherwise static page fresh and constantly updating which is supposed to be good for SEO.

One thing I have found useful when managing feed distribution is working through the list of ping.fm connected services.

So for each major site I create a unique ping.fm account and setup all the social media accounts that support RSS.

Depending on the site sometimes the wordpress comment feed is more valuable for getting traffic rather than the content feed.

I know what RSS means but I have no idea how can it help with SEO; Unfortunately I don't even know how this whole stuff work on ping.fm (maybe I am too dumb) - if a new entry appears in my feed it will be automatically sent to all of those social media sites and will be published under my username?
