I'm trying to collect some thoughts about this issue, I launched a feed service recently and want to know what people prefer? to host a feed with a feed service? or to use a feed script right from their own server?
Now if you prefer to use feed script from your own server, how I can change your mind? meaning, what is the features you ask for to start using a hosted feed service?
I appreciate any help.
Thanks.
I prefer to keep control of my feeds even if I use a third-party like FeedBurner to host them. I use a 302 redirect [webmasterworld.com] to help keep visitors subscribing to a feed with my URL. Now that FeedBurner has been acquired by Google you can now also use their MyBrand service for free. That lets you change your DNS to serve feeds from your domain.
The biggest problem with using an outside service is that it's hard to know how long they'll be around. If you build up a large subscriber base and the third-party company disappears there goes all your work. The third party need to make the process as transparent as possible for the user.
I'm aware of "mybrand" service that feedburner provides, so I took this step already and added this feature to my service, I almost added every feature that feedburner has and more but still on my test server and will go live soon.
The only thing I can't compete feedburner with is " reputation ", so you're totally right, I need to make people trust my service, "trust" is way important than any feature :) and I'll start working on this point.
Thank you for your thoughts, they really helped
