building a trackback system

I've been to movabletype.org and read all about what trackbacks do and I have created my code but what I don't understand is how do I let someone else's system know where to ping my site?

Is it as simple as creating a link that includes rel="trackback" and has trackback as the link text? Or is there more to it?

I know this is a fairly old thing now but I want to learn more about it and this seems to be the one thing that isn't explained well enough for me to understand.

I've always used the TrackBack built into MT or other CMS packages, so I'm not exactly sure how you'd do it yourself. I'd start looking here:

Standalone TrackBack [movabletype.com] - This tool allows anyone with a server capable of running CGI scripts to send and receive TrackBack pings, and display those pings on their public site.

That's what I have found, although at a different location on their site, but unfortunately the zip file isn't available through the download link.

I did find another site with instructions on how to implement the file (once I locate it) and it looks like it just requires the link, but I'm not sure.

I'm not quite ready to add the code to the site I'm building so I have some time to figure this out. Maybe I missed something in the documentation...

I contacted the people at MT, and they located a download for the standalone TrackBack package, here:

However they mentioned this caveat:

Please do note that this package has not been updated, and we are unable to provide official support for its use (it is now quite old, and not actively maintained).
