A lot of the new phones in Japan have music players in them as memory is up around 4GB on the high end phones and even the lower end seems to have at least 1GB. However, we're pretty much stuck with the player that comes with the phone. You're limited to the sorts of files you can play depending on the phone's software. Are you able to install music player software on your phone?

I've heard about efforts to standardize the podcast format, and that might work as a way to propagate music as well. The problem is then the software that will aggregate and play those files. Will it run on your phone and do you have the appropriate audio jacks or bluetooth capability so that you can listen to the music?

At least in Japan I see a lot of proprietary efforts to tackle this issue. There's very little interoperability unfortunately.
