The sites have many RSS feeds. But they also offer up articles from such and such a place, which have the source of the article at the top and the words "Adapted from an article by such and such an organisation" at the end.
Q1? What degree of adaptation is required, so you can legally reproduce an article.
Q2? Is there an automated way of doing this? (I am using carp for my feeds)

If you're planning to do a true adaptation of someone else's work you would need to credit the original source and then create significantly different copy. I don't see how such a process could be done automatically.
Is there something I am missing? Or are they just reckless?
