Can I do this?

Hi, I have been admiring several information sites, for some time and have decided to start my own. Albeit with a different subject matter.

The sites have many RSS feeds. But they also offer up articles from such and such a place, which have the source of the article at the top and the words "Adapted from an article by such and such an organisation" at the end.

Q1? What degree of adaptation is required, so you can legally reproduce an article.

Q2? Is there an automated way of doing this? (I am using carp for my feeds)

Generally it's not a good idea to seek legal advice on a forum. Take into consideration that I'm not a lawyer. I would guess that this would fall under the doctrine of "fair use [en.wikipedia.org]". The application of this in law will obviously differ from place to place.

If you're planning to do a true adaptation of someone else's work you would need to credit the original source and then create significantly different copy. I don't see how such a process could be done automatically.

On further investigation, I see that these sites are also serving up rss feeds, that when clicked open up a new page in their own sites.
As I understand it this is sailing very close to the wind.
These are reputable sites and I cant imagine that they are doing anything illegal. Also due to the large number of feed sources, getting permission from every publisher would seem a herculean task.

Is there something I am missing? Or are they just reckless?

Check with services like All Headline News, Moreover, Yellowbrix. They all provide commercial level services for news and content.
