Does anyone have a script that demonstrates how to create and send an RSS update ping?

I am programming in PHP but any script that would be useful to all would be appreciated. FYI, I'd prefer to write my own script rather than send info into a ready-built program for processing and distribution.

Also, what guides do you suggest as being authoritative?
