Pinterest can DECIMATE your traffic if done wrong

A few months ago I reviewed a small-ish 3 year old site for a blogging friend to see if I could help her out. It's probably the 30th time I found the same Pinterest related issue. Now, this isn't a hate post against Pinterest, many people love Pinterest and it's done some cool things over the years, but this is worth discussing.

Her content was great, she's going to school for the subject and is passionate and knowledgable about it, it was light, well written, great titles etc. Keyword research was solid too and her Pinterest account looked great.

"When I'm done with a post I add a PIN from it to my Pinterest and my friends love it".

Oops, that explins why Pinterest outranks the blog in search. A copy of the main image, complete with a copy of the page title and description, and a bunch of comentary on the Pinterest version outranks her blog posts, almost 100% of the time. Upon deleting all her pins, and about 2 months of waiting, traffic on her blog has exploded.

If you must have your content copied to Pinterest don't let the Pinterest version have your page titles and any on-page content as a description. Google may prefer the Pinterest version of your posts better..

Interesting. I've not heard of this phenom before. Usually it is the other way. I know two people who do nothing but market their site through pinterest.
