I've never had to use those (sorry, I'm a newbie), but I was wondering what they do? Is "\n" equivalent to the br tag?

\n is a linefeed character and \t is tab character. For more information on escaped characters, refer to the documentation on strings: [
php.net
...]

Thanks again, eelixduppy! I should have read the PHP.net manual before posting that question.
Now I got used to "\t" and "\n" and I'm using it a lot.
