Microsoft has announced a Surface Duo phone running Android operating system. It's a folding display device with two 5.6-inch screens, once opened, turns it into a mini tablet.
Each display will run different apps, or the second display can be turned into a keyboard.

...holiday season 2020? That's still a ways off.

Looks like they're staying away from the folding panel ala Samsung and going for a traditional hinge.

Yes, that does seem a little far away. MS must be gauging interest, what with the Samsung foldable, and others coming out with similar technology.
I wonder about the longevity of the Samsung phone, whereas, this technology is tried an tested.

I wonder about the longevity of the Samsung phone,

All I see are stories of review units lasting about a day under regular use before the fold-able screens develop issues. It's a great concept, but I think we're a few generations away from a true fold-able screen that can be used my the masses. Anyone buying a fold-able Samsung unit today is paying to be a beta tester.

MS was smart to just show a good old tried and true mechanical hinge on the device in the announcement.
