ipad vpn to windows xp machine

Ok, so Im just looking to know what is and isnt possible here.

So far I believe I have set up a VPN server on my home computer. I am trying to use my Ipad to connect to it and browse shared files.

From what I know this is possible with a mac running snow leopard.

I dont really know much about VPN, what can one do with it? Should I be able to view shared drives and folders?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I found an ipad ap called filebrowser which allowed me to find a pc by IP address, when I did that I was able to browse files. When I am away from home I can turn on the vpn and then I am able to browse files on my home network. The only problem now is the windows firewall has to be turned off to work, so obviously there is an exception I need to create but I dont know what.

The XP firewall is not very configurable. However, you can add exceptions. Microsoft has some instructions here: [microsoft.com...] Perhaps you can add your VPN this way.

If that doesn't work you may want to substitute the Windows firewall for another software firewall. You certainly wouldn't want an XP machine open to the Internet.

Yeah I have messed with it quite a bit so far an no exception seems to work. I have my laptop using vnc so that I can tweek the firewall and then connect VPN from the ipad. Only when the firewall is disabled am I able to connect through VPN. I think Ill try going to my moms house and play with it some more. In the meantime, any 3rd party firewalls you recommend? I used to use sygate.

I haven't used a software firewall, other than the one in Windows, for so many years. I'm afraid I could only give you outdated info there. I normally use a hardware firewall router for remote connections like this.
