I understand that the mouse needs batteries. They have been changed. Dell did not help because what they told me to do did not work. Downloading an upgrade that did not work with my computer.
Someone other than Dell muct be able to troubleshoot. I am looking for a forum where that would happen. Any suggestions?

If the problem is mouse then you probably need to check whats wrong with your laptop. Is it bluetooth mouse or just wireless mouse that uses a USB port?
There should be no need for any special upgrades to software or OS for using a mouse. Mouse are automatically recognized by OS. (unless you are talking about very old OS like windows 95/98/ME).
However, I would check to make sure that (1) the window isn't obscured and (2) that you didn't change surfaces. Some mice absolutely refuse to work on certain surfaces.
Also, I plugged the receiver for my mouse into a USB extension cable so the receiver is right next to the mouse.
