Yeah, big news.

i have been using fring app for iPhone which hooks up with Skype. Not that great but it works.

I had to do some research to figure out what was going on here. So, have I got this right?

Skype will allow iPhone users to make free calls to other Skype users when they are connected to a WiFi hotspot? That's it? You can't call people who are not on Skype?

you can call people not on skype with skype out. Its only a couple of cents say from Australia to the UK. We use it all the time.

Yes this is what I have been waiting for.

I use a logitech cordless handset but it needs windows to run as there are no mac drivers. Another programe I don't need windows to run-even better. Soon I will be compleatly mac based. well here's hoping as I have had it windows (yes I do run Vista on Bootcamp OSX and the contrast is incredible)

In the UK (and some other spots in Europe) Skype has been offering this service for some time now (years?) on regular mobile phones, it is possible to call other skype users (using skype on their mobiles or computer) but not other phone numbers which is more than fair. Also there's a fair use policy. It was a simple downloadable Java application, I didn't know it did not run on an iPhone.

I have just downloaded and this is what I have been waiting for.

It works a treat too.

I put in my user name and password and there were all my contacts. You just scroll to select them. It works with skype out too. To test it I called my brothers land line in the UK from Australia-it has speaker phone too. It was very very clear, no echo much better than our old logitech hand set. He said I sounded fine, better than our old phone.

With skype we just purchase say $20 and it lasts us for 6 months and most of our cals are international. We never use it skype to skype though but skype out is brilliant.

Yes Three have it on their mobiles but you can't do skype out so not much use.

Not really that new, there have always been SIP clients for the iPhone.

I have been using VoiP on my iTouch with a headset for almost a year now.

oooh! i see violent waters ahead for cell phone carriers trying to get people to take high minute plans. once skype starts offering its service to other cell phones you could just add all your friends to skype and take a 100 minute plan with web access.

I downloaded and installed in today. Only used it over our own wifi network, but it worked a treat.

Its ok but very buggy

When I make a skype out call there is a lot of silence and me going hello hello hello, and the person Iv'e called going hello hello hello and then just as the other side is about to put the phone down they can hear me.
Also sometimes when you pick a contact it crashes.

Overall very polished but not there yet-we need an update.

I use skype IM on my mobile but when i am traveling on my mobile i use vopium as i get free 30 minutes and texts free
