I plan to build a ringtone (traditional ringtone and mp3 ringtone) website for a niche market. I have no idea how to build it (well, I do know domain name, hosting, apache, a bit php&mysql).

My immediate objective is to allow users to download ringtones to their cell phones. I *may* charge per download.

Could you please tell me:

1) How to make ringtone? I need to make rigngtones from recordings, some are recorded by recording equipment, some are phone recording.

2) How to transfer ringtone to mobile phones? I know ringtone by SMS is very popular, how to do that?

3) $$ issues.

If I adopt ringtone by SMS, how much will carries charge me? How can I charge users? Any affordable & turn-key solution?

(This will be a personal website. But I may charge some fees if I have to pay third party (like carriers) fees)

4) compatibility issues

There are so many different brands, models, carries in the market, how can I make sure most users can receive ringtone by sms successfully?
