Opera 16 just updated - but did it?! How to tell?

Auto-update happened so quickly it's left me wondering if I was scammed!

A few days ago I installed Opera 16 on a new (fast) machine. (Previously been using Opera 12.16 on old machine.) Today I opened Opera and a bunch of other programs and whilst Opera was already behind other windows a small alert popped up stating something along the lines of "a new version of Opera is ready to be installed, install now?". In my morning-ness I happily clicked "Yes" and before I could even blink, let alone switch back to Opera, it had seemingly installed - or had it?!

As far as I'm aware it didn't restart or anything like that? I'm on version 16.0.1196.80 - but this was released 12 days ago according to filehippo!? In fact, I can't tell that anything has actually updated! Which makes me rather concerned that it wasn't really Opera that was prompting me to begin with, but something else far more malicious!?

Is this how Opera updates these days?

How can I tell it has been updated? Or when?

Can I disable this "auto-update" thing? (Although it would seem to have gone more Chrome-like in this respect - *sigh*)

I use 12.16 primarily. I haven't seen this yet.

I do have 16.0.1196.62 installed separately, but there is no auto-update for that version that I have found. Do the newer versions of 16.x have auto-update?

I could not find any "auto-update" option within the settings of Opera 16 (I was hoping to disable this if I could, as I have always chosen to manually update Opera in the past - auto updating is never a good thing when you just want to get in there quickly and do something!)

However, I realise today that I am now on Opera 17.0.1241.45 ! I have been automagically updated at some point and I was unaware!

I just fired up Opera 16 to have a look again...and it's still on the same version. No auto-update here.

Give it a few minutes. ;) I've found the auto-update check can occur at any time - not just when it first starts.

...I realise today that I am now on Opera 17.0.1241.45 ! I have been automagically updated at some point and I was unaware!

I think this was actually as a result of my previous download/install on Oct 8, it would have downloaded Opera 17 at that time, not Opera 16. (Op 17 was released on Oct 8 [opera.com]) The update is only installed after you restart Opera, but there is no prompt to do so.

I have since had another minor update (17.01241.45 to 17.10241.53) and it seems that it is only that I now have UAC enabled (I previously had this turned off for a while) that I get to see the "Terms and Conditions" Window (behind the UAC dialog) - but you don't appear to have to accept this? The only user interaction is the initial "There is an update, install now?" prompt. (Although, as stated, it doesn't actually appear to "install now"... it "downloads now" and installs later.)
