Opera 16 Final

Less than two months ago [webmasterworld.com] we saw Opera 15, the first Chromium poweered version of Opera. Now we have Opera 16 [opera.com].

Opera is certainly on a fast development track, but I'm surprised that O16 is still lacking a lot of the basic Opera features. There's no bookmarks support outside of Speed Dial, no feeds support, no site preferences, and my favorite sidebar is still MIA.

O16 introduces Discover and Stash. Discover looks like a content discovery tool, and Stash lets you save pages. I'll have to play with those more to see if they're useful.

Without all the old Opera features I'l likely just keep O16 for testing while continuing to use 12.16

Sadly, I agree. Opera is my favorite browser, but 50% of that is its innovative features.

Feel the same way. Opera 12.16 will be like the last version of Eudora... I hung onto it until technology rendered it obsolete and the competition finally caught up.

Sadly, Opera is now just another one of the countless Chrome based browsers vying for attention. It has nothing going for it now except it's name and user base (much of which is abandoning ship).

At the very least they should have kept this all under wraps for much longer so they could make an announcement when they had a product with 95%+ of the Opera features the user base was used to.

To be clear, Opera is not "Chrome based" but uses the same rendering engine. Outside of the engine, the rest is Opera.

Why are you surprised about that? The first version is barely out the door, so they haven't had the time to implement most features yet.

I'm not sure how being based on Chrome is relevant. People don't care what it's based on.

How do you know that?

Take a look at the discussion over at Opera, people are abandoning it. Well, a more accurate description would be many people aren't upgrading.

In my opinion being based on Chrome's engine is relevant. Opera's engine is fast, has had fewer security exploits over the years, etc. I have no compelling reason to use the Opera/Chrome without all the great things about the Opera user experience gone.

Why are you surprised about that? The first version is barely out the door, so they haven't had the time to implement most features yet.

This is the third iteration by my count...beginning with Opera Next [webmasterworld.com] 3 months ago. How many major version numbers do we give them to at least get the basic Opera features implemented? As I see it those features are probably the only things that might differentiate Opera from Chrome.

To be clear, Opera is not "Chrome based" but uses the same rendering engine. Outside of the engine, the rest is Opera.

Its does not just use the rendering engine: it a modified version of Chromium (the open source browser on which Chrome is based). Opera have clearly stated this many times since the initial announcement, they say they are using Webkit AND Chromium:

It also means that Opera will be committed to using Google's planned fork of Webkit as their future rendering engine.

I agree. This is an end of an era. I can't believe that it's been almost 15 years since I first installed Opera 3.5 to start playing with some advanced (for then) CSS.

Try Opera 17 NEXT - which is there prerelease version of V17.

It is much more feature complete.

try opera:flags in the address bar for a bunch of new options.
