How does that work? I can't even reproduce the example on that page. And who are the 'selected providers'? Questions, questions....

Yeah it's too bad really. With Geolocation even Opera is joining the privacy-invading bunch. So, there's no safe option anymore.

Now there's one browser where MS is looking over your shoulder, one where Google is looking over your shoulder, and one that tells everybody+dog exactly where you are located.

Geolocation combined with the user agent is pretty much a unique fingerprint. Especially as Opera does not permit a custom User Agent string.

So, now there are two browsers p0wned by Google, one by MS and one by Apple. I think I'm going back to IE now. On Linux there are other alternatives.

It's pretty easy to opt out. From the same page:

The first time you go to a Web site that requests geolocation information, Google Location Services' terms and conditions are presented. If you agree to them, the service is activated,

After that, every time a Web site requests geolocation information, Opera tells you, and gives you a choice: to send your location data, or not to send it.

If you at first reject Google Location Services' terms and conditions, but later change your mind, open opera:config, search for "Enable Geolocation", check the checkbox, and save the settings.

Tedster: I read that, but thanks. However, it's about trust. I don't trust companies that consider it a benefit to send Google detailled information about my behaviour and/or location.

So, IMHO now Opera is officially on the slippery slope away from user control, and towards becoming yet another tentacle of the Google know-it-all beast.

@RonPK: Search suggestions are available for Wikipedia, Yandex (in selected areas) and Bing. Others will follow.

- opera:config#Geolocation|LocationProviderURL can be changed to point to any url or even a local file.
- Geolocation can be disabled completely in advanced->network
- When geolocation is action for a site (because you have accepted it), there is an icon in the address bar you can click on to disable it again or change other options.

This is all opt-in and the user gets a non-legal speak introduction to what this is about before enabling/disabling it. W3C Geolocation is becoming more and more common in many social services and I don't think anyone can afford to not implement it anymore.

i've been trying to use opera full time for the past week and it still seems very quirky on some sites... shame!
