Bing's Duane Forrester has published his top ten SEO myths, and whilst he's poking a bit of fun, and many are well known myths, but it's clear that buying links is out, just as it is with Google.

You want links to surprise you. You should never know in advance a link is coming, or where it’s coming from. If you do, that’s the wrong path. Links are part of the bigger picture. You want them, but you want them to be natural. If an engine sees you growing tem naturally, you’re rewarded with rankings. Duane missed the boat with this one:

•Buying ads helps my rankings
• Nope. No amount of ad buying will get you organically ranked higher. If you still believe this today, click here. The instant and engine starts determining ranking based on ads bought is the instant it loses credibility. Game over, Player One.

If you have great content, a good user experience, offer something different than your competition and purchase the right keywords or ads on on the right sites, buying ads is a good way to get found, build your brand, ignite word of mouth, stimulate social sharing and build natural links. I'm speaking from experience of doing this successfully when launching several websites.

Duane missed the boat with this one:

He's talking about ads having a direct impact on rankings:

"No amount of ad buying will get you organically ranked higher."

Seems pretty clear to me.

Links are all I need
While important as a vote of confidence for the content they point to, there is simply so much link spam these days that it’s tough to know where to turn

So very true. And that point is about sixth on his list not number one.

According to the video at the link above, Matt's video says "links are still important for the next few years".
I simply, seriously doubt their ability to judge which are natural and which are paid for. And which were paid for by competitors.

"but it’s not your call to make. Great content is content that’s deemed great by searchers and visitors to your site."

So it really DOES help degrade my competitors rankings if I have everyone in the office and friends and family visit my competitor's site frequently from different proxy IPs and bounce back immediately to the search engine! Thanks for confirming that!

Just shows how much HE knows about A-51 "myths" ;-).

Isn't Duane Forrester talking about Bing's algorithm? I thought that it differs from Google's, especially with regard to how backlinks are incorporated.

I don't see any Bing specific things here.. Not impressed, almost everything that was said was, "you can't rely on just this one thing" The whole myth part of this is barely addressed. Most if not all of this has been written in a in depth article described across multiple posts on moz, majestic, or any of the other major SEO blogs.
