Has anyone got a solution that works?

IE, I believe, only displays the favicon when uploaded to the server,
but without fuller information, it is impossible to say.

I can say, though, that this code works OK for me in IE9...

Another option is to link to the full path where your favicon is.

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="http://example.com/images/favicon.ico">

Some browsers do not immediately update bookmark images when changed during a session. So try clearing cache and then restart your browser for any changes to appear.

The "link rel" code is not necessary for this to happen, but it is most useful for showing different icons for select pages.

I solved the problem!

It turned out my favicon.ico was actually a png file (even though I renamed it, it needed to be converted from png to ico). I did so, then re-uploaded it to my site at almost every level (server, blog root, theme, images folder, etc.). I also included a higher resolution image for Safari. Now it shows in EVERY browser! I only had to use the code below in my header file:

<link rel="icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
