but you have to request it

Give us back our storage [onedrive.uservoice.com]

In November we made a business decision to reduce storage limits for OneDrive. Since then, we’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused. We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community.

Wow, first open source ChakraCore JavaScript Virtual Machine w/ Edge, now giving back cloud storage. I guess if they want to stay relevant, especially in the mobile world, they need to start being *that* company.

This fiasco is just a preview of the future. TANSTAAFL. MS does not have an altruistic heart ... never has, but they have been known to give some things away for free (absorbing costs) until a level of saturation/dependence has been achieved.

Setting aside privacy or third party access/storage of your data, the secondary is retaining complete control and ability to backup on your own devices.

I suspect that MS will keep a minimal One Drive available, 5gb at least because so much of Win10s actual config relies on web assess to MS cloud servers.

Ultimately this is heading toward a monthly bill for storage, just like the subscription based Office 365 and Adobe's CS products....

Agreed, and that's why 5gb is probably a tipping point that most cloud space is around.
It's easy to use for the average user, so why change.

Disk space is cheap, but if you can add features it'll make it more attractive.

That's indeed what they're doing. If you want to claim back the 15GB cache that you had before you must follow the link I posted above before January 31. I had some accounts that had accrued much more space through promotions and the link above allowed me to recover that space.

You can maintain some control over that even with these corporate owned cloud services. You can locally encrypt every file before it is uploaded with services like BoxCryptor or CloudFogger. This allows you to view the files normally locally, but when they're in the cloud they're encrypted.
