Microsoft has committed total all-out suicide. Windows 8 makes Vista look like an undebatable success. It took me 15 minutes to figure out how to shut this junk off. The toolbars are STILL not customizable and now they're just all over the place in a different way. Can't kill off Metro. Read on a tech news site that they're actually going out of their way to manually remove any ability to reimplement the start menu by any one. A multi-billion dollar corporation going ga-ga over an iPad and destroying their main product is NOT how to run a business! In fact that is EXACTLY how to destroy their own business!

Any one with an once of sense should go check out React OS, binary compatible with Windows with the familiar GUI of XP. It's still in Alpha but damn it is FAST! Still a little ways to go though at this point the Microsoft Titanic has taken on too much water, I'm surprised the lights are still on.

Seems like they're finally admitting that Win8 is not intended for desktop PC's. It's for "new devices." A desktop PC is not a new device.

its still a device they need to support. What about laptops.. not new either.... what is everyone with a keyboard and a mouse supposed to do. Grab some crayons and finger paints? oh yea hey office, its play time i got you all some cool pads to play with... hope you can still get your normal workload done. BTW there is a new playground out back for your breaks, its got cool swings and free kool-aid.

You're kidding, right? The Windows install base is somewhere around 1.25 billion machines. The closest competitor, OS X, is somewhere around 50 million.

The last two versions of Windows have been adopted slowly; they mostly follow the trend of new computer sales. 80% of Windows installs come from new computer sales.

Microsoft isn't worried about Windows 8, because the people that will be using it will have it installed on computers (or devices) designed for it. They have the largest and best OEM certification program in the world for computer hardware.

I'm not a Microsoft apologist, but damn, sometimes I think people around here forget that they're talking about the company that basically brought to market the PC desktop on a mass scale, not some kid developing some tiny piece of software in their basement.

I just want to see more desktop improvments, instead of kind of shoving it under the rug. I don't even care about losing the start menu if the metro menu works better cool... but also lets not make it this jarring feature. (( does aero peek still work? cause its very handy ))

It would be really cool to have win8 in a phone, tab, laptop, desktop... but lets make it a little less disorganized.

I think it makes more sense than supporting two different UIs. It is sub-optimal as a server interface, but that doesn't really matter, because:

This was the biggest jump ahead for Windows Server since NT came out. People have been asking for a non-GUI version of Server forever and now we have it. This is extremely beneficial to the majority of enterprise customers who script and deploy their servers as VMs these days and who, frankly, don't need (or want!) any sort of graphical admin capabilities running on the server which just waste resources.

I'm was much more excited about Server Core than I am metro. ;-)

That's not what is being offered in the Windows 8 Release Preview. They have been going out of their way to disable hacks that allow you to boot into the desktop or restore the old Start button functionality. Like it or not, MS is switching to this new Metro interface as the default.
