First, Windows 8 is the official product name for the next x86/64 editions of Windows.

For PCs and tablets powered by x86 processors (both 32 and 64 bit), we will have two editions: Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.

Windows RT is the newest member of the Windows family – also known as Windows on ARM or WOA

This is a much smaller number of versions that they usually issue for a major release of Windows.

I'm so glad MS have moved away from the dozen-or-so different versions. It confused the heck out of me. Having 3 versions makes a lot more sense.

Theyve been talking about Windows 8 for sometime. The best bit is that it now runs on all types of hardware. No doubt about it, windows will be running on several millions of phones within a couple of years.

The extra features dont interest me though, much rather have an optimised operating system that doesnt crash.

It's actually more like 4 or 5 versions:

Windows 8
Windows 8 Pro
Windows 8 Enterprise
Windows 8 RT

Plus whatever Windows 8 Server flavor there is.

Good move, imho, and it'd be nice to get all the browsers into a similar tidy group.
