Microsoft Looks Set To Give Outlook a More Open Future [news.bbc.co.uk]
Microsoft has announced plans to open up the format of the data files used by its e-mail program Outlook.

The software giant said it would provide full documentation on the format so non-Microsoft developers can interrogate and use it.

Microsoft said it was making the move because data portability was becoming increasingly important to customers and clients.

No deadline was given for when the documentation effort will be complete.

Make the .pst into a mail standard? That could keep the platform going for a bit longer with all of these cloud services popping up. It's great to have a .pst backup of all your mail, and now if I could bring that backup to a new provider (without Exchange) and start up again, that would be great!

Some of the reports I've read indicate MS will truly open the pst platform to any and all and NOT require Outlook installs. This could be a very nice thing!
