Microsoft reported a rise in quarterly profit on Thursday, boosted by strong sales of its Windows operating system, and the company raised its full-year profit outlook, sending its shares up 4 percent.

The world's largest software maker said net profit in its fiscal second quarter rose to $4.7 billion, or 50 cents per diluted share, from $2.6 billion, or 26 cents per diluted share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 30 percent to $16.37 billion.

"They continue seeing the business being healthy for the remainder of the fiscal year."

Revenue from "Online Services Business", which I assume is search engine and such, increased from $625 million to $863 million. This is a good 38% jump.

On the other hand Google is likely to report revenues of $3.44 billion in last qtr. So MSN is not as far behind Google as we like to assume.

What bodes well is the CE division remained in the black, last quarters profit wasn't a fluke as so many industry analysts portrayed.

Zune & Xbox appear to be turning some cash in ;)

Not bad for Microsoft. But still money is easy for Google. Billions of dollars of profit from online advertising alone.
