Mobile load time slowed by structured data?

15kb of product reviews take 25 seconds to display

Page size is 175kb. A combination of images and text, it is a retail page for a product.

The product review section contains 12 reviews marked as structured data, validates perfectly with Google's tool. The entire review section is 15KB.

The page load is accelerated using a small js file and base64 placeholder. Fonts are being delayed and pre-loaded by the fontfaceobserver method.

The page receives a 97% rating by gtmetrix, so I infer details like caching, etc. are handled properly.

The page with the reviews fully loads on a smartphone in 1 and a half minutes. Same page without the reviews loads in 24 seconds.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I have not tested a page that is using structured data personally but on a similar note, this current article might give more insight as the testing tool Google is showing now is an improved version. Results are shown along with suggestions on how to speed things up: [webmasterworld.com...]
