My Windows 7 recognizes the Nexus 5 but I cannot see any files or folders; any tips ?

Have you tried something like Total Commander or AirDroid? There are many 3rd party apps out there that would likely help with this.

Another vote for Total Commander. Its roots go back to Norton Commander, from DOS days, and it offers an interface that's versatile and user friendly. There's lots to like about it beyond the access it allows to many types of files not visible in Windows Explorer.
