Tag Iphone App to determine if came from website or direct

We are developing an Iphone app.

It will be available from the Apple store and via our website.

Is there any way to determine if the user that downloads it and starts using it (via xml to our site) came from our website, or initially found it in the Store.

With the way that Apple has their closed off universe, there isn't a way to know for sure. They did recently change their affiliate program and allow you to add tags. So you could know where your own links are coming from and translate into sales. But there is no way to know the store stats, what keywords work in the store or whatever.
