Windows 10 Bug Could Corrupt a Hard Drive

Microsoft has said it'll be fixing a bug in Windows 10 that researches say is a "nasty vulnerability" and can corrupt a hard drive. Apparently, the bug has been in the software for some time, almost three years, but there's a fix on the way, says Microsoft.

“The use of this technique relies on social engineering and as always we encourage our customers to practice good computing habits online, including exercising caution when opening unknown files, or accepting file transfers.”

Physically corrupt your HD sectors? Or - the more likely - corrupt your data?

I assume the latter.

Dormann also revealed the vulnerability has existed in Windows 10 for nearly three years, and that he reported another NTFS issue two years ago that still hasn’t been fixed.

For God's sake you can report Windows 10 issues to Microsoft until the cows come home - and they still do nothing.

I am wondering if this was the cause of the problems I have been having recently... had to replace with new hard drives 5 times in last 3-4 weeks. But I am running Windows 7 with my Windows 10 installation in a VMware Workstation VM.

My corruption was to the boot sector each time.
