I just bought a new computer. It fits in a bag more easily for travel and I should be able to connect to modern wifi now, but the windows 10 experience has not been good so far. I don't understand why they make it all about the operating system. In my ideal world I should be able to ignore the operating system, not share everything I do with it, and just go about using the internet and my favourite programs (apps) as normal.

Main difference with the change to windows 10 so far is I have replaced office with libre office to avoid paying subscriptions. Seems to work much the same.

Tempted to try Linux on something. I feel windows 10 does more than I either need or am happy with.

Reality is change has to be inserted to continue charging bucks.

I suspect that a large number of Win7 will still be in use much like there was an impossible number of XP machines running during the life of Win7!

Some folks won't get the memo. Others might not have the bucks. Others are simply satisfied and see no reason.

However, all things must die and for some things it will be a long time dying ... but it will still eventually die.

MS is in it for the long term. Early adopters are their test kiddies. And there will come a time...

Still... Linux is looking better for 100% of my systems and Win10 just might be the reason I move there.

Thanks to Mr Microsoft and his rotten unwanted updates the dreaded Error 0xC00D426A has resurrected its ugly head again with my file transfers from a video STB which has always worked lovely for many years over my LAN until last year. All the gawdy details from last year - 27th May, 2018 are here:

I followed Andre's advice and everything ran sweet thereafter. In recent times Windows has been able to stealthily update progressively to the latest, which I have rolled back but only to 1803. [I had used every known method to stop updates and it is still annoying me twice a day]

What has this to do with Win 7. Well the best file copy program I came across has been Q-Dir [so good I donated] but it can't overcome the problem. All the XP machines won't allow media streaming/nor see my STB 10.1.1.251 and none of them can upgrade to Win 7.

So <Irony alert> I'm asking my local mates who may still have unwanted Win 7 machines so I can give them a try. Failing that I'll try for a machine capable of Win 8 Pro.

Through a very convoluted process of having to repair a friends windows 7 PC I by chance this week I obtained a legit copy of Win 7 Pro at a fair price.

Also unrelated I purchased some cheap near new/old stock WD 500 Gb HDD drives.
To rebuild ,my friends PC I nstalled my new drive with Win 7,then resurrected their 1 Tb drive, reinstalling Win 7- they were ripped off in the past over it.

So I'm left with a drive with Win 7 Pro, I also have among my collection a Dell Optiplex 330 which is right now a Win Pro 7 machine processing 167 updates [mass updater wouldn't work].

The best part? It sees my STB 10.1.1.251 . I'll install Q-Dir later and see how copying goes.

If it works their is no reason for the Dell to connect to the internet, just my LAN
