Microsoft Says It Won't Hit Windows 10 Target of 1 bln Devices by 2018

Microsoft has admitted it'll not reach its target of Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by mid 2018. It's probably the phone business side that'll be stopping that from happening.

"Windows 10 is off to the hottest start in history with over 350M monthly active devices, with record customer satisfaction and engagement. We're pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business, it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices. In the year ahead, we are excited about usage growth coming from commercial deployments and new devices - and increasing customer delight with Windows."

Could be ... then again, it could be me doing all I can for my clients this last month in REMOVING Win10 or the more aggressive GWX app with malicious disregard to "X" as a "consent". Many of these machines will fail the final install because they aren't QUITE enough hardware to get the job done.

There's been six machines in the last two weeks that actually stopped working because of Win10. Fortunately I cleaned those up, removed the Win10 Malware and Not Quite Installed Downgrade Performance products.

Three other clients begged me to put them back on Win7 after a few weeks of Win10's phone home ripping through firewalls and other things, fortunately in TIME regarding the roll back to 7 for 2, though 1 had to start with a fresh install of 7 after backup and reformatting for 1 client.

I'll do all I can to prevent the 1B number from happening, and thank MS for the extra work opportunity in removing their new product from systems that did not desire the upgrade. Total so far is in the 4 figure range.

Now that I have this Win10 block/removal down to a science I've sent out an email alert to ALL of my clients offering to either revert, remove, or secure their systems for x dollars per seat between now and July 30, which SHOULD, we hope, see the end of this sinister corporate onslaught against Machines and Humans alike.

(Yeah, yeah, hyped up sarcasm, but there is a bit of serious to that: I have made a LOT of money cleaning machines in the last three weeks!)

Will add that today one of my clients wanted me to FIX their failed Win10 install. Which I did (customer is always right!) In process of doing same I asked why, when he knew I was not for it...

"Saves me $100."

"How do you figure that?" I asked.

"Win Pro, $200 and as a sub it's only $84!"

I shrugged. Who can argue that $84 every year from here on out will be cheaper than staying where you already are and have already depreciated the expense of the operating system against cost of doing business. I guess more than a few will drink that same koolaid....

Note: I installed that machine for the client 3 years ago.
