Windows 10 upgrade on dual boot machine

Will Win10 kill GRUB?

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this yet. I have one machine that has a dual boot setup. One OS is Windows 8.1, and the other is a Linux variant. The GRUB boot loader controls the switching between the OSs. I am fearful that Windows 10 might mess with the boot loader during the upgrade and kill my other OS.

I didn't have a problem with it. The only thing is Grub still states "Windows 7", but of course, now loads Windows 10.

Did a bit of research and there are lots of threads on the Ubuntu forums about GRUB being messed with during Win10 updates. From what I can gather it seems as though having UEFI is an issue. That might be something to look for. I'm not using Ubuntu, but it may be relevant.

It might be. The computer I upgraded doesn't have UEFI, so that may be why I have no problems.

A solution, if ( as is frequently the case ) installing win 10 where Linux exists already ( dual boot ) "kills grub", is given here..

Might need to modify the "edit" depending on which flavour of linux you are running..

You might also look into Grub2win ..freeware..

This machine has Win8 and the other OS already installed with GRUB2 working fine. The threads I read indicated that Win10 was overwriting the GRUB entirely and just booting to Win10.
