Firing up the Desktop this morning I'm met with a purple ribbon across the Desktop telling me about upgrading. Being in a cavalier mood this fine, sunny late winter morning in Sydney area I thought "Yeah, why not"?

Fun, Fun, Fun...

First drama? During the installation phase [drivers] I get the BSD. This one is the "Black Screen of Death". Oh dear! Been there, done that when I upgraded from Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 Pro - it was not a happy experience [long story]. Based upon that unhappy experience, and with fingers crossed? I switched the TV from the morning news service over to HDMI No. 2 input [PC].

Yep there's my Monitor in all its glory - the real PC Monitor is DEAD. Grrr... So I leave it to go along happily by itself, and after the driver phase is finished, the monitor comes to life. Phew eventually fixed itself with the right drivers.

Next I declined "Express Settings", and went for "Customise" - be aware that's hiding in subdued small print bottom left hand side.

Away we go again. It now tells me my Microsoft Media Centre will be disabled in Windows 10. Whoa! Accept or throw a spanner in the works? I'll bite the bullet and accept.

Anyway from then on it was plain sailing. End result when it did its final restart? The difference from say yesterday?

Same Desktop PC, apart from a minor keyboard glitch I'm aware of and can fix later...

You wouldn't even know it was Windows 10 Pro unless I told you so.

There are minor differences in File Explorer which I'm familiar with on the Win 10 Laptop. I can live with that. It substituted "The Edge" for IE 11 - I killed that off. All I have left to do is find out how to remove the pointless "Search the Web and Windows" panel consuming valuable space on my Task Bar.

IE11, FF 39.03, PaintShop Pro, Mailwasher, NoteTab Pro, Microsoft Movie Maker - they all still work - same settings, same history, same everything...

And I'm a Happy Chappy! - I'm on very good terms with myself, and I'll now update FF to 40.

I hope others enjoy my relatively painless experience.

Another thing. Afterwards go to Settings/Update

There are quite a few. Malicious Software Removal Tool, Microsoft Office... I'll check all the other programs I use for updates as well now.

I had no choice but to upgrade ti Win 10 today.

My computer stopped rebooting today, got hung on some driver and after trying to getting Win 8.1 to load about 20 times, Safe Mode, etc. then I finally got back into the full Win 8.1 desktop. Since it appeared to be a driver problem instead of hardware, the solutions were to refresh back to Win 8, a step backwards, or install Win 10 and pray.

So I went for broke and installed Windows 10.

Surprisingly, it went as smooth as silk.

The only complaints so far is the same bugs for the optically challenged were still there and when you have the magnifier docked to the bottom, the taskbar menus and stuff are still behind it, can't get to it, and cortana has the same issue. The only thing that works right is the START menu pops up above the magnifier.

This has been an issue since Vista, when I started having eye issues and still there, 4 versions later. So either nobody complains or MS doesn't give a rats ass about the optically challenged.

Next problem, the magnifier still 'crashes' when you come back from sleep it's just solid black. Doesn't refresh until you move it or something. In Win 8 pushing the Win key 2x solved it but now on the desktop there's no full screen start page so now it's a problem again.

Really hard to believe this crap still happens 4 versions later.

Seriously?

I am seriously surprised as well in this day and age of "alleged" enlightenment.

I have NOT made a reservation.
Nonetheless, Microsoft considered it appropriate to download the upgrade onto my machine, eating up the larger part of my mobile bandwidth for the month in the process.

Where can I send the invoice?

I'm still battling the unexpected keyboard layout problem. Had the same before when I went from Win 8 to 8.1 Can't remember the fix though.

Yes, region and language settings are correct. Apparently I'm not the only person.

bird, that is despicable of MS, and i has suspected that may happen. I'm frequently on a bandwidth-restricted mobile service and really do not want to go through that problem. If it cannot be controlled, the only thing I can think of is to put limits on the downloads.

I'm currently holding off from the upgrade to see what problems are surfacing.

All I have left to do is find out how to remove the pointless "Search the Web and Windows" panel consuming valuable space on my Task Bar.

Right Click Taskbar > Search > Hidden

I had no issues performing the upgrade. It took about 15 minutes and everything went smoothly. There are some visual changes but for the most part, it's been a seamless transition.

Apart from getting folders ro behave how I wanted them to I've had only one issue.

On two laptops I used their ISO and everthing went fine, on one of my PCs I allowed MS to do it and it went well until I tested all my programmes and my email client wouldn't work since it was incompatible.

This is the same email client as on the two laptops which work perfectly. I'll be doing all our other machines with the ISO since we all use the same email client.

I upgraded an old box on purpose just to see what it was like.
The only glitch was that 10 wouldn't continue the install until I removed the wireless card. Upon after the install, I put the wireless card back in and it was all business as usual.
I wonder how much Microsoft had to borrow from Open Source to get this thing to work.

I had a client over the other day and he couldn't tell the difference between my Linux panel and my Windows panel.
If you've never had Linux Mint (Cinnamon), all you have to do is set the windows desktop up in the standard fashion, and wallah .. it's a mint. Still not as intuitive as Mint, but oh well ... at least Microsoft might be finally getting a clue for once.

I updated my laptop and my desktop, the former from Win 7, the latter 8.1. Both went fine apart from:
- Outlook issue on the laptop, kept crashing. Someone gave me a MS Exchange registered email address to use, and this, of all things, was the problem
- Outlook issue on the desktop. Couldn't locate the pst/ost file. Had to make a new one.
- Some Wifi connection issues on the desktop, resolved by updating the adapter driver.
- Some Wifi connection issues on the laptop, still not quite resolved. The troubleshooter fixes it, but only until I reboot.

Other than that, I like it! I know it's fashionable to slag of MS, but as someone who needs the most productive productivity suite there is, there's nothing better. I know it has some bugs - the complexity is incredible - but it's now a lot better than apple or linux, despite what their respective fanboys say. Of course as all journalists use macs, all you'll hear about are the MS bugs.

(And I've just set up a Raspberry Pi for my son. Now there's a machine. Mind you, first attempt to install Raspbian I had a "kernel panic". Hadn't know before that a kernel was capable of such an emotion. Second time around, worked fine. Biggest delight for my son was discovering the pre-installation of Minecraft Pi)

Right Click Taskbar > Search > Hidden

Thanks, I'd already done that. Still have the keyboard issue, the solution is still swimming around in my head.

Digressing slightly...

BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - BSOD - Which we all know and love so well.

This happened on the Laptop Win 10 several days ago while I was wrestling with copying large files from a PVR via my Network to a large USB removable HDD. Microsoft still haven't resolved long known issues in copying file via File Explorer. Start at 11.2 Mb/S and dribble down to 12 Kb/s. Intermittent.

Anyhoo! There is no BSOD so far, Windows 10 simply throws a tantrum - then you go straight to your Desktop. Somewhat like "Snakes and Ladders" game of my childhood. Start over.

At least I don't have to restart the Laptop!

I've put it on three machines so far. The main issues I'm running have to do with dual monitors (windows go jumping around, or minimize so far off screen I have a hard time pulling them back, or they don't open in the monitor I want them to)

I'm also have a screen issue with Thunderbird; every now and then I'll go into it and it'll be blank white; I kind of have to "paint" the screen with my mouse to get the screen back. Easier to just shut it down and re-open. I'm told Thunderbird has a bunch of Win 10 issues, so I'm probably lucky that's the only one I've seen. I'm not looking to go back to Outlook or even whatever kind of mail program is built in.

Everything else seems to be easy peasy. I'm not using Edge, but I've taken it for a spin and it does seem pretty fast. No add-ons though, so I can't really use it for, like *working* on anything.

Oh one other thing - it seems like Excel and other Office programs are slower to load. I'm using 2013. That's a little annoying.

netmeg, I'm using Thunderbird 24.4 and I have nary a problem at all. I have never used Outlook.

As for Edge? I can use Chrome if I actually needed a plain vanilla browser. I removed Edge from the task bar and replaced it will IE11.

I use IE11 for some things, and FF for most of my regular daily, by rote activities such as responding to you.

After updating to Win 10, I went back and did further updates, it included some Office stuff. Updating to just Windows 10 is NOT the end of it - you might need to update many other things if necessary. Rock on over to Settings/Update and Security. I would also recommend checking EVERYTHING in settings - just in case you have overlooked some nasty surprises you might disagree with. I would start with Privacy. Definitely if you have an on board Camera and Microphone. Heh! Heh!

And I just solved the Keyboard layout dilemma as well. Damn, nothing left!

Now for Mr. Microsoft's File Copy problem as far back as Win XP for me. Can someone direct me to the appropriate WebmasterWorld forum to ask the questions?

I like it when a good plan comes together. Depending upon the circumstances [owners] for each machine...

Check for Updates and then review each of your Settings, particularly Privacy. Do it and likely be surprised.

I did the reservation a couple months ago and got the Get Windows 10 icon in the task bar. Starting a week or so ago, every time I wake-up or turn on my machine, a pop-up appears saying Your Upgrade is Ready... so I click on the notice, but after changing to the next screen it says "Windows 10 is downloading in the background. We'll let you know when your upgrade is ready."

Well crap, didn't you just let me know?

This goes on several times a day for over a week now. Still no upgrade :(

I like the Google Tool bar to use for various things but I can't add it on 10 bummer. Other than that 10 is a pleasant surprise still working through some file issues and small things but 10 is so much faster than anything out there. I still use chrome and Firefox but my main browser is 10.

Here's a bandwidth saver. If you have more than one computer still waiting to be upgraded to 10, download this tool to a 4 gb flash drive. Click on the icon and it will then download the necessary files to upgrade. You can then use the same drive to update all your eligible computers. I've used it on 3 computers and it worked fine:

You can still run Internet Explorer 11 with the Google Toolbar.

Yes IE11 still lives in Windows 10. Well it does on mine, here's where it was under 8.1 and it still works quite happily. Same favourites etc all uninterrupted.

While it wasn't 100% perfect, so far Win 10 is to Win 8 what Win 7 was to Vista.

Finally made it where desktop users can use all the apps which should have been in Win 8 and the amount of potential lost revenue for app writers that sell their wares in the Store because of that is incalculable, but probably significant.

Win 10 almost makes me want to roll up my sleeves and start writing Windows software again, which I did from Win 2 thru XP, but I think I'll stick to the web for now. ;)

Which part, about writing Windows software?

I did it for many years and was really good at it and let it all go when I got bitten by the web.

Giving Windows a "wrap-up" - an Australian expression mate. I played with the software back in Windows 3.1, but like yourself became distracted with the web and teaching electronics.

And Radio.
