Do we think is is a good idea to get SP3 now, or wait a while to see if there are any issues with it? I remember SP2 being a bit of a nighmare for some users.

I'll leave it for a month, download and slipstream it then install it on my second laptop - if it goes horribly wrong it'll be no more than a nuisance.

The only trouble I had with SP2 is that allowing VMware Server services to run automatically would severely delay how long (in the Windows task manager) processes would become associated with user names. If the associations did not yet exist I could not do numerous things including accessing the internet.

With SP3 I've noticed no issues save for the fact that security center which I had disabled was reenabled by SP3. I'm fine with that as I know how to turn it off though non-savvy users may benefit by having it enabled.

I coudn't find the SP3 for stand alone machines.

Go to Windows Update...

I've installed the "IT professional" version (non-Windows Update) on two machines with no problems. It seems to use a little less memory, and the options for "sharing" files and folders on a network have changed to allow more granular control of network permissions. That's all I've noticed so far.

Installing it also shortened the user-agent string sent by my IE browser -- It removed the terribly-long list of .NET version identifiers, reducing the user-agent string to about half its previous length.

I used the IT profesional version of SP2 on my machine. It is essentialy the same download, except not being automaticaly installed as part of a Windows update. I just find the standalone download a lot quicker.
