question about XP service pack 2

After removing Vista I install XP & upgrade to sp2 but system won't work

I re-install XP on my laptop.
it works but it is not perfect so I have to update everything.

when I install service pack 2 and the system reboots.
It goes into the cylce of rebooting.

I can not go to safe or even command prompt.
I get the same error with each.

The only choice to fix the problem is re-install the OS.

I would leave it as is...
But my chip drivers depend on sp2 and I have no sound.

Microsoft is useless to answer question.
Has anyone had this same problem?

What is the error?
Are you formating the hard drive when reinstalling xp?

There is no erreur listed.
Welcome screen.... black screen for login... reboot.
Then

Last start up terminated unexpectedly.
Choose
safe moode..
Safe moode with command.
etc etc

Regardless of choice.
Same result.

Clean hard drive each time on install.

Try to obtain an XP cd with servicepack 2 already installed. If you have access to a computer running servicepack 2 (and a CD writer installed) you can create your own... google XP Slipstreaming.

Did that today.
Same result.

I am making the check of hard ware conflictions now.
But for the moment I can continue to update the computer but not install SP2

One thing to be aware of: Sometimes computer vendors will supply a motherboard device "driver" that must be installed before the machine will actually work properly with newer Windows operating systems. Check the "drivers" disk that came with the machine, and also the support section on the manufacturer's Web site.
