Problem upgrading from SP1 to SP2 win XP

Hello everyone. I have a problem installing SP2 on windows XP home. After unsuccessful attempt to download an update from Microsoft I ordered SP2 on the CD. After finishing extracting files from the CD dialog box appeared saying “the main system file using to start up the computer is not Microsoft windows file” Is it possible to change computer startup file? If yes how? Thanks

It is the precise message.
I asked the people who were installing OS on my computer, they told me that the CD they used is the copy of genuine windows OS CD. I was told that Microsoft uses some kind of bugs, to recognize the copy not the original CD. Anyway if is true, don’t mind I will just buy genuine CD later. But if there is a way to overcome it let me know. Thanks.

Do you have a genuine copy of Windows to begin with? I've heard of built-in upgrade obstacles for pirated copies of the OS. You can check to see whether you have a valid copy of Windows here:

I do know how the CD looked like. The choises the site shows are only XP professional and I have home edition. However I do have this mark of Geniune software. I get all updates exept SP2 for win XP home. Anyway I whink it is probably the bug, which indicates that I use a copy of geniune CD of OS. When I try to install SP2 at the end it says that the main system file using to start up the computer is not Microsoft windows file. If you have any ideas let me know

The choises the site shows are only XP professional and I have home edition.

I just ran the Windows validation on 2 different copies of XP Home to confirm that it works. It does. There are other ways [microsoft.com] to tell if your copy of XP is genuine.

Thanks.It looks like it is a copy of geniune CD. Still didn't solve the problem i have. Does any one know whether it is possible to change main sustem start up file that starts the computer?

If you have a genuine copy of the OS then it won't matter if you're using a copy of the CD or not.

We still need the exact text of the entire error message. I'm not coming up with anything in the MS KB for this.

Hello again! This is the exact message.
“The main system file that is used to start up the computer is not the file of Microsoft Windows. The update package would not be installed. If you would like to have more information reveal to Microsoft Knowledge base Article code: Q327101 at the address www.support.microsoft.com.”
I don’t really thins it will change anything. But if you have any ideas let me know.

Did you try the resolution steps outlined in Q327101 [support.microsoft.com]?
