Two days ago my Windows XP updated itself online because the live updates option was ON in the Security Panel.
Since then when I start windows it doesn't ask for password and starts right a way. Also when I log off or switch user then whatever i enter as password it accepts it and starts windows. It is a critical concern for me as I have important files on my pc and I want to fix it before anyone on my network realize that my windows has gone made and accepts valid and invalid all passwords.
I wonder if anyone could help me please.
thanks
however from Manage Computer -> users and groups I can SET password for admin and it does it without any problem but control panel is not allowing me...
not sure what has happened and how to recover it... will it be a good idea to restore my machine from Restore System Utility?

Sorry, I'm not clear what's happening here. You're saying that you can set the password but when you log in it doesn't ask for a password?
Restoring your machine to an earlier time might be a good idea. It might be some other software or setting change that you made that is affecting this.
