Not answering your question, but one big advantage Mac has over Windows is that rsync works easily (I think it may even be pre-installed). Makes backup/sync over SFTP fast and easy (especially with a GUI front end).

I've always used Fetch. But it's mainly because I got it eons ago at the academic price. A few years ago when I had SFTP problems I also got Fugu.

Disclaimer: I'm on 10.6. Don't know about .8/.9 compatibility.

thanks for the feedback Lucy I was beginning to wonder if there was any Mac users here !- I'll have a look at that, so far tried Yummy FTP, not too impressed just doesn't offer the easy interface Cute offers, or should that be offered !

Transmit is another choice, and Filezilla is a freebie.

But FTP is (as suggested above) built in on Macs.

In Finder, press Command+K for the client.

Use the ftps protocol for an SSL connection.

Alternatively, you can use an SSH connection from Terminal.

Guess I'm old: I just use command line ftp on my mac if I need it - like on any unix box.

But ftp - still ? really ? I run no more ftp service on any of my servers (expect for a proxy on my firewalls that protect the office.)

Good point swa66 - everyone should be using SFTP not FTP.

Last time I used a Mac Cyberduck seemed to work OK.

If Finder now supports SFTP (if not out of the box, it definitely does with additional software)), its probably the best way to go. Its what I have been doing with Linux file managers for years, and its a lot more intuitive and comfortable.

Been using Fetch for many years. It's simple and works perfectly every time. FTP is still an absolute necessity in my line of work.

Oh dear.

It seems that the Finder drag'n'drop FTP method - unlike WebDAV - is read only. For a webmaster this is only marginally more useful than a chocolate teapot, apologies for the bum steer.

But the command line method (Terminal) works as expected, so technically OSX does have built-in FTP support and a third-party client is not necessary.
