iTunes 10.1, OS X 10.6.5 and iOS 4.2 Available This Week

iTunes 10.1 and OS X 10.6.5 Coming Tomorrow, iOS 4.2 On Friday at 10 AM PST [macstories.net]

An inside source at AT&T told MacStories that Apple is planning to release iOS 4.2, a major OS update for iPhones, iPods and iPads, on Friday November 12th at 10 AM PST. We also learned that updates to iTunes and Mac OS X will be released sometime tomorrow — iTunes will be reaching version 10.10.0 (simply called iTunes 10.1) and Mac OS X will jump to the long-awaited 10.6.5 version.

Many users expected iOS 4.2 to be available today: iOS 4.2, however, depends on iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 for its AirPlay and AirPrint functionalities, respectively.

That's a lot of releases...
I'm looking forward to the iOS upgrade myself.

Until iTunes stops forcing me to install "helper" software on my computer that cannot be shut off (it is always on and relaunches itself if you shut it down) I'll stick with the competition.

Hmmm. You have to be careful about news from Apple. Rumors are always flying around. This sounds right, but until Apple actually does something, it's just a rumor

AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is the only "helper" software that iTunes installs and it is easily shut off and disabled forever. In 9 years I've never once seen the Apple helper software re-launch itself after I stopped the process.

I think most people are annoyed that for any update apple update selects everything automagically (even if its not installed..) so its easy to get stuck with a bunch of stuff people didn't want requiring more updates as they get updated :)

I'm intrigued if this will help speed up the 3gs or if that was just a silly rumor to stop android/wp7 momentum

I keep saying this but for a company that does some things so well, it's software end and usability is abysmal. Itunes for windows reminds me of software of 15 years ago with all its quirks and flaws, preventing me from multitasking (on several computers no less).

The kicker is having tried updating my ipod touch to 4.1 and giving up at 72 hours "backing up", should I look forward to an update I probably won't be able to use?

Each Ipod should come with a staff member in the box. Let THEM fix this mess.

That's incorrect, ITunesHelper.exe is the "helper" that is automatically installed on your computer, runs in the background constantly looking for updates, and can't be shut off permanently since it turns itself back on (and re-installs itself when deleted).

IpodService.exe also does something similar though doesn't put up the same fight when attempting to remove.

When you're using your computer, but not using your ipod or the itunes service, there is NO good reason for these to run constantly yet that is what they are set up to do, 24/7/365. Shame on apple for this.
