Microsoft on Thursday said the next version of Office for Mac will arrive by the 2010 holiday buying season, and it added that the new version will include a version of Outlook.
Outlook for Mac will replace Entourage, the current e-mail and calendar program in the Mac Office suite. Although it will still differ from the Windows version of Outlook, it will add support for more Exchange features, such as public folders and rights management features.

Wondering if by 2011 when this hits the market if there will be mac users left who care about office and outlook to pay for this.

They're announcing something for 15-16 months in to the future that nobody cares about? That seems odd.

I could care, if they or anyone else would explain why I should. One way to not spend money that I used to spend is not buying software. But, I do use Office on my Mac and I like having it.

I used to use Office. I found it was necessary due to all of the files sent to me by my clients.

Since I bought iWork, I have never once opened any of the MS products. I find the Apple products to be easier to use, more elegant and they do everything I need to easily replace Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

I like Entourage. It is far more fully featured than Mail IMO. My main problem with it is that syncing with iCal doesn't work. Or rather, it works occasionally, which is more than useless. (The debate is still raging as to whether that is Apple or MSs fault).

Since I bought iWork, I have never once opened any of the MS products

How well does it translate complicated Word and Excel documents? I'd be interested in not having to upgrade to Office 2008, if iWork was a good substitute.

Travelin Cat, I make PowerPoints for others to use sometimes and I worry that iWorks cannot handle it. It's just a risk I cannot afford.

Another factor is that sometimes I work on other computers and it's easier to just work with one interface on Word and Excel.

I agree with Bunny, Entourage is superior to Mac Mail. I used both (Mac Mail at home, Entourage at work. I switche to Entourage at home.

I don't get it. Why did MS bother to make a full-fledged Mac application version of Outlook when they're clearly heading to a cloud based version of Office with Office 2010 and beyond? That seems like a lot of wasted resources to appease the small percentage of Mac users who actually might buy this.

Why did MS bother

Apple is adding connectivity to exchange servers in Mail.app on snow leopard (coming out any day now).
One of the main sellers of the (expensive) business licenses for Office:mac is the IT departments that are incompetent enough not to be able to enable the imap protocol on their exchange servers and hence block Mail.app from accessing corporate email.

That argument will go away in a few weeks time ... So the timing of this forward looking statement of Microsoft in that context sounds a lot different from any real plan or promise. It's marketing as usual.
