Audio editing software for Mac

Preferably free or cheap

I used to use Sound Studio 2 on my old Mac to digitise vinyl and edit the sound files. With a new machine now bought, I need to get something to do the same job. However, I'm quite surprised to see Sound Studio 3 go for something like $80. That strikes me as being a bit rich, especially as I paid around a quarter of that the last time around.

All right, so I'm probably being really tight, but are there any other reasonable audio editing software options out there?

Garage Band, it comes with the mac. Or try Audacity.

Must admit I have neither a garage nor a band, so didn't even give it a second glance. Will investigate...

Garage band does some things good, audacity does others. Like, audacity can rip a sound file from a CD, I find it's easier to cut and paste within a sound file with audacity. Garage band is good at multi-tracking and mixing. I use both, they complement each other.

Audacity is totally free, not shareware or crippleware.

Just been looking at Audacity again and it seems to do everything that I need, which is great. Funny that as I had it all along but had dismissed it completely. It came with my USB turntable along with something called EZ converter (or similar). That was too basic and I'd lumped that and Audacity together in terms of what they could do. Looks like I've saved myself $80 - thanks!
