A much-anticipated new version of the iPhone will go on sale Friday, but Apple Inc. will at the same time take the wraps off another offering that could have a more lasting impact on the mobile phone business. The Cupertino, Calif., company will open its App Store, an online bazaar that will attempt to do for mobile applications like games, reference guides and other software what Apple's iTunes Store has done for music. Software developers and analysts say Apple's method of distributing mobile applications -- along with sophisticated capabilities of the iPhone -- represent one of the most ambitious efforts yet to refashion mobile phones into something closer to personal computers.

Apparently the new app store is a major hit with over 10 million apps downloaded over the opening weekend. This from Steve Jobs:
"The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. "Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”
Some of the apps I downloaded are absolutely great and very useful, others (flashlight) not so much...
