Apple has warned Windows users running its iTunes software that they should wait for its next update before upgrading their PCs to Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system.
The company cited a variety of compatibility issues that may cause friction between the media player software, its accompanying iPod player and Vista. Among these problems is an inability to play music or video purchased from the iTunes Store, problems synchronising address book contact and calendar functions, and slowed runtime. Additionally, there is a chance that plugging an iPod into a computer running Vista may corrupt the device.

It seems, to me at least, that Apple and MS could have had those problems solved before now. Was Apple lazy about testing? MS had plenty of betas out before the final release. Did MS change something at the last minute that broke iTunes on some machines?

Whoever is at fault, I (and many others) do have to wonder if it was on purpose...

The following is stated as a comparison.
According to Wikipedia, Mac OS X was released in March 2001. The first office product for Mac OS X was released in November 2001.
I don't think it's very surprising that it will take a new version release for iTunes to work on Vista, though I doubt it'll take 8 months.

Considering how many of Microsoft's applications have issues similar to iTunes when running on Vista (even Visual Studio .NET needs to be "Run as admin"), I think Apple can be cut a little slack.

As much as I like iTunes, it's not killing me that I have to wait for them. I'm running Vista and am one of the people whose 1st gen Shuffle got corrupted when I plugged it in (a restore from another computer solved it). I'm just going to continue using WinAmp with their included plugin which allows me to use it with my Shuffle.
