Monolingual? A good idea? (You try it first.)

Remove unnecessary languages, "reclaim hundreds megabites"

Monolingual is said to be "a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)." It's freeware.

Now, what's the verdict? Good idea or not?

Not knowing the product, I can only say that hard drives are really cheap and the possibility exists that you may cripple some system software or other software as well.

I would think that a second hard drive would be a better solution then possibly comprimising your Mac.

A Freeware product that removes resources from your Mac can be a very scary thing.

I belive you can avoid installing most language stuff when doing a custom install of osx.

Like the previous poster I would avoid something like this unless I had seen several good reviews from people I trusted.

Nah... you don't hurt anything by getting rid of the extra languages or leaving them out altogether.

I used Monolingual way back a few years ago, and it didn't hurt anything. But since then, I always just install the system without the extra languages. Sure, disk drives are big enough these days that it doesn't matter all that much, but I'm absolutely positive I will not ever need five variants of Chinese on my Mac, or Russian Cyrillic. Why devote about 600 MB of space to them?

I agree with all. I'm still with OS 10.3.9 here at the house, waiting for the next package after 10.4. (I like 10.4--I have it at the office.) When I install, I'm leaving out the languages.

I used DeLocalizer when I was running on an old G4, and the amount of disk space regained was most pleasing.

Like the others, I now omit the languages during installation. But if MonoLingual works as well as DeLocalizer, I'd not be scared to try it.
