To take your example literally, you are performing a single-word search for a product, not a service?

If you searched for the type of business that sells teapots, e.g. homewares, then the results will be more encouraging. The word needs to imply a commercial search, e.g. sheep doesn't bring up a map for me even though I sometimes eat parts of one. :)

Having said that, I have seen the map appearing for a single business for a commercial single-word search, but the map is usually a few positions lower for such searches. In Australia, our IP addresses are not restricted to a narrow area, hence at present if I search for cameras (I work in downtown Melbourne, which has the greatest concentration of camera stores), I am getting a map about 3 suburbs away.

So, when Enhanced Listings are rolled out for everyone, then the yellow Enhanced Listing icon should also appear for such solo map results.

or should I try it and if within three months I do not appear on a map then cancel it?

Under "Universal Search" (that is Google's "blended search" results which will display image search, video search, news search, map search, etc -- interspersed through various regular keyword search results) only some keywords will invoke the Map content to appear.

So, as anallawalla described, a search for "housewares" may invoke the local results -- a "7-pack" of business listings + map -- within Google's regular keyword search results.

Google has apparently earmarked a large number of traditional business-type (you could also call them "business category") keywords to invoke the map results. If your desired keyword is not already invoking the local map results, paying advertising is unlikely to help make that happen, in my opinion. Google has a longstanding wall within their company, dividing the advertising from product engineering to large degree -- so, they focus user-experience and usability upon the decision making for product development, as opposed to prioritizing money-making concerns higher.

I would suggest to you to insure your website is optimized to rank in the regular web search results for your target keyword + locality. So, if your business is in Boston, optimize for "Boston teapots".

Second, I'd suggest that you request that Google add your keyword (if it's a type of business) to their list of keywords which invoke the local/Maps content to appear under Universal Search. You could submit the request via their Google Maps Group forum.

My site is national, ranks, is optimized.
When I found that state wide I did not find such a map, featuring any links to any similar businesses as mine I thought that I could use the enhanced listing as some sort of additional exposure.

Actually I might use a "widget" that I provide (part of the service) to create an account pointing to my "widget"
